Why you should not chuck onion husks into rubbish bin?

The simple answer is: because it is a very valuable product with many useful properties. Let me introduce some of them.

Everybody knows how amazing onion itself is. But the onion husks have many benefits as a home remedy and not just that.

The onion husks contain fiber and ingredients that decrease a risk of cardio-vascular conditions as well as have a healing and anti-inflammatory effect on intestinal gastric tract and on the body in general.

The onion husks is rich in flavonoids, fructose and fiber. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants with anti-inflammatory and immune system benefits.

In recent years a lot of studies demonstrated an important role of flavonoids in prevention of such serious conditions like cancer, diabetes and Neurodegenerative disease.

A large-scale, 25-year study, published in 1995 in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, looked at men across seven countries and found that flavonoid consumption was significantly associated with longevity. The researchers suggested flavonoid consumption could account for 25 per cent of the observed difference in mortality rates from coronary heart disease and cancer.

Lets see a few examples of how the onion husks can be used as home remedy.

  • Fighting the cough

This is a recipe for using an onion husks concoction as expectorant soothing strong annoying cough and supporting quicker recovery.

To prepare this remedy take 15 onion heads, collect husks and cover it with 1 L of cold water. Bring it to boil and simmer until a half of the liquid evaporates. Then let it cools down completely, strain and drink 2 tablespoons 4-5 times a day.

  • Treating skin conditions

In order to get rid of warts, small cuts, fungus and dermatitis one can use finely chopped husks mixed 2 to 3 parts with some fatty cream or Vaseline. Apply it to your damaged skin 2 times a day. Store it in a cool place.

  • Help with edema and varicose disease

That recipe is to reduce pains in the legs and at the varicose and vein disease.

Take 2 tablespoons of the husks and 2 tablespoons of chamomile flowers. Cover with 2 glasses of water, boil the mixture for 15 minutes and leave it for up to 5-6 hours. Then simmer it until a half of water evaporates.

What is left, rub it into painful areas.

Another option is to mix finely chopped onion husks with equal amount of olive oil. Leave it for 10 days in a glass container and then use it for feet and legs massage.

  • Natural hair growth booster

Very popular use of the husks is in hair care. It is widely used to support hair growth, strengthening the hair and giving it a beautiful shine.

This decoction is veryeasy to prepare. Just take 1 part of husks and roughly twice as much water and leave it to infuse for a few hours. Ring your hair with this infusion each time after you wash you hair. Keep doing it for a few weeks and you see a noticeable improvement.

  • Food colouring

Onion husks has an excellent, just harmless but healthy food colouring’s property. Adding onion husks or even the whole onion, washed but with the husks intact, while cooking a chicken soup or broth, make them look more appealing and appetizing with its slight golden hue.

  • Great for plants as well

The onion husks decoction can be used for rinsing indoor plants cleansing them of the mites and various bacteria. It is also works as a fertilizer. To make a decoction just take a glass full of husks, place it in 1L jar, pour boiled water over it and leave for a day. Next day strain it and clean your plants, especially the reversed side of the leaves. Next day rinse them with clean water.

That is far from the whole list of the onion husks benefits but those are easy to prepare and apply.
